C. Bruce Rose, Mayor

Before the people of Wilson elected him to office, Mayor Bruce Rose served for 30 years with the Wilson Fire Department, seven of which he served as Fire Chief. Elected in 1992, Mayor Rose is currently serving his fifth term.

He attended fire schools throughout North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, including the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He is a graduate of the Executive Development Course of Chief Fire Officers in Emmitsburg.

Mayor Rose is a life member of the N.C. Association of Fire Chiefs and served on the Board of Directors for four years. He is also a life member of the N.C. Association of Retired Fire Chiefs and served an appointment by Governor James B. Hunt to the N.C. Fire Commission. Mayor Rose received the 1999 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

He received an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Fire Science Technology from Wilson Technical Community College. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He is also a graduate of Charles L. Coon High School.

Rose is a lifetime member of Wilson First Pentecostal Holiness Church where he has served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. 

He and his wife, Becky Davis Rose, are active in community and church functions throughout the city.

A. P. Coleman - Council District 1

Councilman Coleman was elected to City Council in 1975 and served as Mayor Pro-Tem for 16 years.

Before retiring a few years ago, Mr. Coleman worked as a Cooperative Extension Agent in Wilson County. Prior to his service there, he taught school in Greene and Lenoir Counties. Councilman Coleman received his M.S. degree in Adult Education from NC State University in Raleigh and his Bachelor of Science from NC A&T in Greensboro.

He was named to the Board of Trustees for the N.C. Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System by former governor Mike Easley. He has served on numerous boards during his political career, including a member of the Small Cities Council, National League of Cities, 1988-1995; and a term as President of the N.C. League of Municipalities in 1991-1992.

In 1996, he was named Wilson’s Distinguished Citizen by the Wilson Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Coleman has three adult children and one grandson.

Gwen C. Burton - Council District 2

Councilwoman Burton was the first African-American woman elected to City Council in 1983. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro before attending law school at N.C. Central University in Durham.

She moved to Wilson in 1975 where she taught school and volunteered at the Wilson OIC (Opportunity Industrialization Commission), a local non-profit group.

She interned with Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm of New York and for Judge Henry Frye, former Chief Justice of the N.C. Supreme Court.

William Thomas "Tom" Fyle - Council District 3

Councilman Fyle is a 1991 graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He also earned an associate degree in business from Beaufort County Community College in 1988. He moved to Wilson after graduation from college and worked in management with one of the city's pharmaceutical plants. Now he is co-owner of Land of Learning Child Care Inc. and is involved in real estate management. He is involved in many community groups and civic clubs. He has been married for more than 20 years and has three children. He was elected to City Council in 2013.

James M. Johnson, III - Council District 4


Councilman Johnson was first elected to the City Council in 1992 and has served as Mayor Pro-Tem since 2002. He is a 1989 graduate of Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Mr. Johnson is also a graduate of Hunt High School. He is a general agent and owner of his family's insurance agency. Councilman Johnson is a past president of Wilson Association of Life Underwriters, past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wilson Community College, where he served 16 years. He is active in many local, regional, state, and national organizations.

Councilman Johnson is married and has two children.

Councilman Donald I. Evans, District 5Donald I. Evans - Council District 5

Councilman Evans has called our area home since 1955. He is President and Co-Owner of Evans Machinery & Metal Fabrication, Inc. He is a member of Evansdale United Methodist Church where he serves as a Lay Leader, Board of Trustee member, and Building Committee Chairman. Mr. Evans served as a county commissioner for four years. He is a Trustee of Wilson Community College, Board member of RBC Centura Bank, Board member of the Wilson Country Club, Board member of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Wilson Industrial Management Council.

Councilman Evans is married and has two children. He is a 1965 graduate of Fike High School.

Logan T. Liles - Council District 6

Councilman Liles is a life-long resident of Wilson County. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Kaplan University and an associate’s degree from Wilson Technical Community College. Mr. Liles is a member of First Baptist Church of Wilson, Wilson Masonic Lodge #712, Wilson County Shrine Club, Sudan Temple and the Wilson Moose Lodge. He is the owner of Signature Homes of Wilson and a retired farmer. Before he was elected to City Council, Mr. Liles served  for four years on the Wilson County Board of Education.

Derrick D. Creech - Council District 7

Councilman Creech is a lifelong resident of Wilson County. He graduated from Charles H. Darden High School in 1970 and attended Winston-Salem State University. He worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., Wilson Community Improvement Association, and Wilson Community College, where he retired in 2013. He has received a bachelor's degree in political science from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton), a master's degree in adult education from East Carolina University, and additional studies at Appalachian State University and Bowie State College. Community activities are Board of Trustees, WCIA; Community Action Committee, Wesley Shelter; Employment Security Commission Job Link Committee; Wilson County Department of Social Services Work First Committee; Past President, Community College Recruiters Opportunities Program. Awards include Wilson Human Relations Distinguished Service to the Wilson Community -- 2003; Award of Appreciation, Mt. Hebron Lodge #42, 1996; Customer Service Award, Wilson Employment Security Commission; Member of Trinity AME Zion and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity.
