These positions assists in the different aquatic areas throughout the Parks and Recreation Department.

The Selection Process

The process begins with a complete evaluation of the applications submitted. All applicants must complete a City of Wilson application. A resume may be attached, but is not a substitute. Incomplete or unsigned applications will not be processed. After screening all candidates, the most qualified will be invited to participate in a personal interview. The interview will cover the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of the vacant position. The applicant determined to best fit the needs of the position will be given careful reference and thorough criminal background check, a drug test and any required medical examinations that may be necessary.

How to Compete in the Process

To be considered for this positions:


Lifeguard– Applicants must know and be able to perform all skills required for certifications.  Applicants are responsible for the safety of pool patrons at all times.  Applicants must be able to follow and enforce all pool policies and rules effectively with public and staff.  Applicants will also be responsible for performing routine secondary duties.  Minimum qualifications include American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications. 


Swimming Lessons Instructor– Applicants must be able to work with children and adults. Ideal candidates will have an outgoing personality with the ability to create a fun and safe learning atmosphere to instruct our youth and/or adult participants.  Employees will be working for 2-4 sessions of 40 minute classes and will be in charge of up to 4 to 6 participants at one time.  Candidates with previous instructor, swim team, or swim team coaching experience are preferred, but not required.  Minimum requirements include some swimming experience, the ability to be trained as an instructor, and the ability to work with all ages.


Swimming Lessons Supervisor
– Applicants must have a strong background in swimming.  Applicants should have previous management/supervising experience running a swimming lessons program.  Applicants must be able to work independently within the established policies and procedures of the department.  Minimum qualifications are WSI or equivalent, American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications.


Assistant Pool Manager– Applicants must have knowledge in the following areas, but not limited to:  assisting the Pool Manager and/or Supervisor in the daily operation of a swimming pool, including sanitation, maintenance, safety and public relations. Applicants must have knowledge in the principles, practices and application of lifesaving and first aid techniques. Applicants must be able to work independently and within the established policies and procedures of the department.   Minimum qualifications include 3-4 years of lifeguarding experience, American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications.  Certified Pool Operator and Lifeguard Instructor Certification is preferred.


Pool Manager– Applicants must have knowledge in the following areas, but not limited to:  the operation of a swimming pool, including sanitation, maintenance, safety and public relations. Applicants must have knowledge in the principles, practices and application of lifesaving and first aid techniques. Applicants must be able to work independently within the established policies and procedures of the department.   Minimum qualifications include Certified Pool Operator, American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications.  Lifeguard Instructor Certification is preferred.


Swim Team Coach– Applicant must be willing to coach as a part time assistant coach to help with all swim team levels on a USA Swimming year-round team.  Work hours will be Monday-Friday from 3:45-6:15pm. Applicants will be responsible for assisting the head coach with daily workouts as well as working with athletes on stroke technique and refinement.  The ideal candidate would help recruit swimmers for the swim team, and have a professional attitude with swimmers and parents at all times.  Minimum qualifications for applicants are having current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications as well as personal USA Swimming experience, coaching experience, and enjoy working with all ages and ability levels.
