JOB TITLE:  PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER III
JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance of parks and recreation buildings and facilities.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Performs building maintenance; performs carpentry, plumbing, welding, and electrical maintenance and repair duties.
Performs small engine repair.
Performs basic fiberglass construction, repair, and maintenance.
Installs playground equipment; installs and repairs chain link fences; repairs tennis courts and paints lines.
Repairs pool filtration system and pump motors.
Fabricates park signs.
Repairs and maintains sports stadium.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of the standards, materials, techniques, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of parks and recreations buildings and facilities.
Knowledge of the installation of playground equipment.
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of swimming pool equipment.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Skill in the operation of such equipment as a stump grinder, lawnmower, and weedeater.
Skill in performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, and fiberglass installation, repair, and maintenance duties.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Crew Supervisor or Maintenance Crewleader assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, Parks and Recreation Policy Manual, and relevant city, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. 
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related technical duties. 
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of parks and recreation buildings and facilities.  Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and attractive parks and recreation facilities to city residents and visitors.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.  The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with
moving parts, and irritating chemicals, and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, gloves, or goggles.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  The position has direct supervision over Parks Maintenance Worker II (2), and Parks Maintenance Worker I (7).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B CDL within twelve months of hire.
