Councilman Johnson was first elected to the City Council in 1992 and has served as Mayor Pro-Tem since 2002.

Councilman Johnson has made significant contributions both professionally and civically throughout his career. As the owner of J. M. Johnson and Associates, his family's life and health insurance company.  He is a 1989 graduate from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Councilman Johnson earned Life Underwriter Training Council’s Fellow (LUTCF) designation in 1992 and completed the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership fellowship in 1993. His commitment to public service is evident through his long-standing role on the City Council, where he was first elected in 1992 and has served as Mayor Pro-Tem since 2002. Councilman Johnson is currently a member of the ElectriCities Board of Directors.  His influence extends beyond local governance; he has previously served as the president of the Wilson Association of Life Underwriters and as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Wilson Community College, a role he held for 16 years.

Active in numerous local, regional, state, and national organizations, Councilman Johnson continues to contribute his expertise and leadership to various causes. His term expires 2027, reflecting his ongoing commitment to the community he serves.
